Introduced in 1982 to replace Group 2, Group A became the backbone of the World Rally Championship from 1987 until 1997. To qualify, manufacturers had to produce at least 2,500 road-legal examples of the base model.
Group A rally cars are modified production vehicles, typically equipped with 2.0-litre turbocharged engines producing around 300 hp, four-wheel drive, and a minimum weight of 1,230 kg. The regulations allowed meaningful modifications while retaining the fundamental road car architecture, creating legendary machines that remain hugely desirable today.
